To keep up with the pace of technical progress and to offer an up-to-date HS nomenclature to the now 160 contracting states and more than 210 user states, the sixth major revision of the HS has now taken place.

Not only have subheadings been deleted, but the wording has been changed in whole or in part in 59 headings.

In 33 of the 96 chapters there are no changes, in 32 chapters there are minor changes.

Substantial changes are made in the following 12 chapters:

Chapters 03, 29, 38, 44, 70, 81, 84, 85, 87, 88, 94 and 97.

Moderate changes are made in the following 19 chapters: 04, 07, 08, 15, 16, 20, 24, 28, 30, 34, 36, 57, 62, 68, 71, 74, 89, 90, and 95.

New sub-headings are added to optimise the allocation of bans and restrictions and to better monitor trade in wastes such as e-waste, as well as dual-use goods, tropical timber, food (including insects and food safety (e.g., seafood) and climate-warming greenhouse gases.
