New import procedure for organic products in Germany

Customs will no longer process organic certificates of inspection (COI) in the future.

As of 1 January 2022, the new Organic Regulation (EU) 2018/848 will apply. In addition, further EU legislation will come into force. Organic import controls will thus be transferred from customs to the organic authorities of the federal states. Organic consignments and corresponding accompanying documents must be checked and handled by the “Länder” authorities before customs clearance in Germany. For customs clearance, this means that an organic inspection certificate authorising the release of the declared consignment for free circulation must be presented. The organic certificate of inspection is presented to customs via the IT system TRACES NT.

Without the organic certificate of inspection validated by the organic authorities, a customs declaration for organic products cannot be accepted by customs!
