The existing restrictive measures against Belarus (Regulation (EC) No. 765/2006) were extended by Regulation (EU) 2023/1594.

Adjustment to sanctions against Russia

The decision was taken by the European Council against the background of Belarus’ involvement in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Among other things, the new regulation contains export bans to Belarus for military equipment such as firearms and ammunition as well as for goods and technologies used for armament. Aerospace industry goods are also affected. The regulation thus aligns the sanctions with Russia.

Circumvention of sanctions restricted

The regulation also ensures that the sanctions against Russia can no longer be circumvented via Belarus. The 11th sanctions package against Russia already aimed to combat circumvention of the sanctions imposed.
