As the German-Hungarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK) informs, new registration and payment obligations apply to manufacturers in the B2C mail order business as of July 1, 2023. These result from the EPR obligation, the extended producer responsibility.

With the EPR obligation, Hungary implements the EU directives in the field of waste management. (Image source: Pixabay)

Who is affected?

The new obligations apply in Hungary to all foreign online stores, or to manufacturers of the products offered there. The following goods, among others, are affected:

  • Electronic devices
  • batteries
  • packaging
  • office supplies
  • vehicles

Producers are required to register with the concession company as well as use the services of a waste management service provider. In addition, registration with the environmental authority is mandatory. This also applies if the manufacturer submits the VAT return via the OSS system in the home country.

With the EPR obligation, Hungary wants to promote the circular economy in its own country and thus reduce waste.
