From 2nd April 2025, this obligation will also apply to nationals of almost all EU countries, including Germany.
The obligation to apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before entering the United Kingdom is gradually being introduced for citizens of more and more countries.
EU citizens will need the ETA for entry – whether for business or private reasons – from 2nd April 2025. It will be possible for them to apply for an ETA from 5th March 2025. This is stated in the ‘Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules’ of 10th September 2024 (PDF).
Holders of a visa or permanent residence permit for the United Kingdom and Irish nationals are exempt from the requirement for an ETA. An ETA cannot replace a visa if one is required.
The application for an ETA is made via an app or a website, costs £10 and is usually processed within three working days.
The British government provides detailed information on the ETA.
