The CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) regulates the classification and labelling of hazardous substances and mixtures. The regulation affects fillers, distributors, users, importers and dealers of certain chemicals in the EU. The recently adopted amendment to the CLP Regulation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. However, the regulation contains numerous transitional provisions until 2026 or 2027. The amendments concern new classification rules, requirements for digital labelling and the design of labels and advertising.

The revision of the CLP Regulation is part of the European Commission’s ‘Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability’. The amendments came into force on 10 December 2024. Transition periods of 18 or 24 months will apply for most of the changes. Additional transitional periods of 42 or 48 months will be granted for the phase-out of substances and mixtures already in the supply chain.
