Chemicals banned in the EU because of their risk to humans and the environment are allowed to be manufactured in the EU and exported to third countries. That could soon change: A consultation is currently underway on legislation to ban the practice.
EU chemicals strategy for sustainability
Back in fall 2020, the EU Commission adopted the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability. The aim is to produce and use safe as well as sustainable chemicals and to protect people and nature more strongly. In the course of this, several harmful chemicals were banned for certain product groups or even completely. Now these safety standards are to be promoted outside the EU as well.
This includes, among other things, a ban on the production and export of chemicals banned in the EU. There are also plans to revise the export requirements of the PIC Regulation.
Until July 31, 2023, citizens as well as companies and organizations can provide their feedback on the legislative initiative via online survey. This will be taken into account in the further development of the initiative.
