The aim of the agreement is to <strong>facilitate cross-border digital business processes<\/strong> and to create a common framework for the electronic exchange of data and services.<\/p>\n<p>A central component of the agreement concerns <strong>cross-border data traffic by electronic means<\/strong>. The relevant provisions can be found in <strong>Articles 5 and 6<\/strong> of the agreement. In particular, it emphasises that a <strong>legal framework for the protection of personal data<\/strong> must remain in place, based on <strong>international standards<\/strong>. This is to ensure that data transfers between the EU and Singapore can take place without undermining data protection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consumer protection in online trade<\/strong> also plays an important role. Under <strong>Article 12<\/strong>, both sides undertake to ensure adequate protection for consumers in digital trade. In addition, <strong>closer cooperation between the competent consumer protection authorities<\/strong> is envisaged in order to better address challenges in cross-border online trade.<\/p>\n<p>The basis for cooperation in the digital sphere is a <strong>joint digital partnership<\/strong>, which is set out in <strong>Article 14 <\/strong>of the agreement. It serves as a central framework for exchanges on <strong>regulatory issues in digital trade<\/strong>. In addition, <strong>Article 22(2)<\/strong> provides that both sides intend to intensify their cooperation in dealing with <strong>cybersecurity incidents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other important provisions concern the <strong>legal recognition of electronic contracts and electronic signatures<\/strong>. According to <strong>Articles 9 and 10<\/strong>, these are to be recognised as legally valid in principle. This will facilitate digital business transactions between companies in the EU and Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement also pays particular attention to <strong>small and medium-sized enterprises<\/strong> (SMEs). <strong>Article 24<\/strong> highlights their important role in trade and investment relations between the two economic areas. At the same time, it emphasises that <strong>digital trade opens up new opportunities for SMEs<\/strong>, for example through simplified market participation and digital business models.<\/p>\n<p>The path to the agreement began in <strong>July 2023<\/strong>, when negotiations on a Digital Trade Agreement were launched. Following the conclusion of talks in July 2024, the <strong>agreement was signed on 7 May 2025<\/strong>. With its entry into force under <strong>Article 38<\/strong>, it is now the<strong> European Union&#8217;s first agreement of its kind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The new set of rules builds on the existing <strong>free trade agreement between the EU and Singapore from 2019<\/strong>.
