{"id":7451,"date":"2025-07-11T10:57:38","date_gmt":"2025-07-11T08:57:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nicola-bernard.de\/?p=7451"},"modified":"2025-07-11T10:57:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-11T08:57:38","slug":"a-new-chapter-for-trade-the-eu-mercosur-agreement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nicola-bernard.de\/en\/a-new-chapter-for-trade-the-eu-mercosur-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"A New Chapter for Trade: The EU-Mercosur Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After <strong>25 years of negotiations<\/strong>, the <strong>EU<\/strong> and the Mercosur countries \u2013 <strong>Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay<\/strong> and <strong>Uruguay<\/strong> \u2013 signed a comprehensive <strong>free trade agreement<\/strong> at the end of 2024. This move was partly driven by the growing <strong>competition from China<\/strong> and increasing trade uncertainties with the <strong>USA<\/strong>, which put pressure on Europe to open up new markets. The agreement is set to create one of the world\u2019s largest free trade zones, covering over <strong>715 million people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Opportunities for German companies and the economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For German businesses, the agreement primarily opens up better access to the previously highly compartmentalised markets of <strong>Brazil<\/strong> and <strong>Argentina<\/strong>. This boosts their <strong>competitiveness<\/strong> compared to suppliers from countries without similar agreements. Companies in <strong>mechanical engineering<\/strong>, <strong>chemical<\/strong>, <strong>pharmaceutical industry<\/strong> and the <strong>automotive sector<\/strong> stand to benefit the most. Access to <strong>public tenders<\/strong> will also be facilitated &#8211; with the exception of the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement also sends out important signals for <strong>sustainability<\/strong>: the Mercosur countries hold significant reserves of <strong>critical raw materials<\/strong> and are strongly committed to <strong>renewable energy<\/strong> \u2013 an advantage for Europe\u2019s goal of <strong>decarbonisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Focus on SMEs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)<\/strong> in particular are burdened by tariffs and trade barriers. The agreement contains a separate chapter, which ensures an optimal supply of information and focusses more strongly on the needs of SMEs. The aim is to make market entry easier and strengthen long-term cooperation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When does the agreement enter into force?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The timeline depends on formal reviews and translations, which are expected to be completed by mid-2025.
