As of <strong>12th March 2025<\/strong>, all previously existing <strong>exceptions and suspensions<\/strong>, including those for the European Union, will be lifted, and the tariffs will come back into effect. Additionally, the scope of affected products will be expanded: In addition to the goods already listed under <strong>Proclamations <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/03\/15\/2018-05478\/adjusting-imports-of-steel-into-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>9705<\/strong><\/a> (2018) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2020\/01\/29\/2020-01806\/adjusting-imports-of-derivative-aluminum-articles-and-derivative-steel-articles-into-the-united\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>9980<\/strong><\/a> (2020), as well as position <strong>9903.80<\/strong> of the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS), further <strong>HTSUS codes<\/strong> from <strong>Proclamations <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2025-02-18\/pdf\/2025-02832.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>10895<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2025-02-18\/pdf\/2025-02833.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>10896<\/strong><\/a> (2025) will now be subject to the tariffs. The specific commodity codes can be found on the last 2-3 pages of the proclamations.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>25 percent additional tariff<\/strong> will be applied to all affected goods on top of the regular import duty. This measure will apply to all <strong>steel and aluminum products<\/strong>, regardless of their country of origin.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>reinstatement of the tariffs<\/strong> marks a continuation of the <strong>trade dispute<\/strong> that began in 2018. Although there were temporary relaxations of the measures, the recent developments indicate that <strong>trade tensions<\/strong> are rising once again.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the <strong>European Commission<\/strong> has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/api\/files\/document\/print\/en\/qanda_25_541\/QANDA_25_541_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>questions and answers document<\/strong><\/a> explaining the tariff policy between the EU and the US and clarifying that <strong>value-added tax<\/strong> on EU-produced goods should <strong>not be considered a discriminatory measure<\/strong> against foreign products.<\/p>\n<p>The return and expansion of US tariffs represent a significant challenge for the European steel and aluminum industry and are likely to further strain the trade relations between the EU and the US.
