{"id":7123,"date":"2025-02-24T11:11:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T09:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nicola-bernard.de\/?p=7123"},"modified":"2025-02-24T11:11:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T09:11:18","slug":"breakthrough-in-negotiations-eu-and-switzerland-deepen-their-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nicola-bernard.de\/en\/breakthrough-in-negotiations-eu-and-switzerland-deepen-their-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"Breakthrough in Negotiations: EU and Switzerland Deepen Their Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 20 December 2024, the President of the <strong>European Commission<\/strong>, <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong>, and the President of the <strong>Swiss Confederation<\/strong>, <strong>Viola Amherd<\/strong>, announced the successful conclusion of negotiations aimed at strengthening and deepening the cooperation between the <strong>EU<\/strong> and <strong>Switzerland<\/strong>. At the heart of this is a <strong>comprehensive package of agreements <\/strong>that will further strengthen and expand the existing relationship.<\/p>\n<p>A key element of the package is the <strong>modernization<\/strong> of five important agreements that already grant <strong>Switzerland<\/strong> access to the <strong>EU Single Market<\/strong>. These agreements cover areas such as <strong>air and land transport<\/strong>, <strong>freedom of movement<\/strong>, <strong>conformity assessment<\/strong>, and <strong>agricultural trade<\/strong>. The goal is to create equal <strong>competitive conditions<\/strong> for businesses on both sides.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, new agreements have been reached, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>food safety agreement<\/strong> covering the entire <strong>food chain<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>health agreement<\/strong> that enables Switzerland to participate in <strong>EU mechanisms<\/strong> for addressing <strong>cross-border health threats<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An <strong>electricity agreement<\/strong>, integrating Switzerland into the <strong>EU internal electricity market<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An agreement on <strong>financial cooperation<\/strong> between Switzerland and the EU, which promotes economic and social cohesion.<\/li>\n<li>An agreement for <strong>Switzerland\u2019s association<\/strong> with the following <strong>EU programs<\/strong>: <strong>Horizon Europe<\/strong>, <strong>Euratom for Research and Training<\/strong>, <strong>ITER\/F4E (Fusion for Energy)<\/strong>, <strong>Digital Europe<\/strong>, <strong>Erasmus+<\/strong>, and <strong>EU4Health<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An agreement that allows <strong>Switzerland\u2019s participation<\/strong> in the <strong>European Space Agency<\/strong> (regarding the <strong>Galileo<\/strong> and <strong>EGNOS<\/strong> programs of the EU).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> stressed that this agreement marks a \u201cnew chapter\u201d in the cooperation, with both sides now able to fully exploit the potential of an even closer partnership.
